Copper Canyon - ITG Worldwide's President
Phil Dougherty, ITG Worldwide President, has made three humanitarian trips to Mexico’s Copper Canyon with his Rotary Club. The Tarahumara Indians, a native people that live in and around the canyon, are struggling to provide basic needs for their families due to a number of factors.

The Rotary team made repairs to a number of remote state run schools (Albuerges) as well as provided clothing, school supplies, food and children’s programs. Matching Grants from partnering Rotary clubs have provided clean water, septic tanks and bathrooms for these schools.

Phil’s description of the area: “The Canyon ridge is a dry mountain desert much like the Sierra’s in California. The views of the canyon can not be described; easy runner up to the wonders of the earth. To the naked eye from canyon overlooks the canyon walls seems void of civilization. But with binoculars you can find activity in this rugged environment; farmers tending to small flocks of sheep or a patch of corn, and small cabin dwellings hidden among the rocks and brush with clothes blowing in the breeze. On the canyon floor small towns appear every so often. It is in these towns that tourists are now appearing. By train and sturdy auto people are finding there way into these remote villages. In the towns with roads leading in and out, decent hotels, restaurants with local favorites and convenience stores are making longer stays possible for more people to enjoy the scenery and people.”

International medical insurance and evacuation coverage is a must when traveling to the Copper Canyon area. Telephone service is available though sporadic and trying to evacuate by car would be time consuming not to mention dangerous and uncomfortable. Not having insurance reduces your options and can turn urgent matters into emergencies, and emergencies into life and death situations.
